UAJY continues to reflect its humanistic values through the actions of its alumni. Fransiska Imakulata, widely known as Sister Ika, a graduate of the Faculty of Law at Universitas Atma Jaya Yogyakarta, led the rescue of 13 women victims of human trafficking in Maumere, Sikka Regency, East Nusa Tenggara.
The case began on January 20, 2026, when Sister Ika received a WhatsApp message from one of the victims. The message conveyed fear and urgency, describing trauma, isolation, and the constant threat to her life. This report prompted immediate attention.
Although initially hesitant due to the complexity of similar cases, Sister Ika chose to respond. She coordinated with the Women and Children Protection Unit of Sikka Police, leading to the first rescue operation on January 21, 2026.
The situation in the field was tense. Sister Ika entered a nightlife venue where the victim was being held, facing uncertainty and risk. The first victim was successfully evacuated in a state of trauma, then brought to the police for initial testimony and placed in a safe house.
Information from the victim revealed that others were still trapped. In the following days, additional reports emerged, supported by photos and videos documenting violence. A second rescue operation on January 23, 2026, resulted in a total of 13 victims being saved.
Throughout the process, Sister Ika and her team encountered various challenges, including pressure in the field and negative narratives on social media. They remained committed to prioritizing the victims’ voices, ensuring that decisions regarding legal action stayed in the hands of those affected.
The effort involved collaboration with the Flores Humanitarian Volunteer Team, law enforcement, legal advocates, and humanitarian networks. Beyond rescue operations, Sister Ika also emphasizes prevention through community education and awareness to reduce cases of trafficking and violence.
This story highlights how UAJY’s values are lived out beyond the classroom. It shows that legal knowledge, when grounded in humanity, becomes a force that protects and restores dignity.
