Two students from the Faculty of Language and Arts (FLA) Soegijapranata Catholic University (SCU), Alvin Bintang Miza Come Reba and Joseph Alvin Prasetya, had the opportunity to participate in an international internship program, Teaching Internship at the University of Saint La Salle (USLS) Bacolod, Philippines. The 25-day program, running from August 11 to September 5, 2025, is part of a collaboration between SCU, through its International Affairs and Cooperation Office (IACO), and the USLS College of Education.

Through this program, SCU students are given the opportunity to explore languages, cultures, academic experiences, and broaden their global mindset. During their internship, Alvin and Joseph not only attended classes at the school, but also had the opportunity to teach in class and discuss with accompanying teachers and lecturers. Joseph, for example, delivered material on “Sequencing of Events” which helped students understand the structure of a sequence of events from beginning, middle, to end.

According to Alvin, this program is beneficial in training teaching methods, classroom management, and building good relationships between teachers and students. “There is a lot of knowledge that can be applied, and we can adapt this in Indonesia,” he said.

However, cultural and language differences pose their own challenges. Alvin admits that these obstacles have actually encouraged them to communicate more actively. “The majority speak English, so we try to talk more often, aren’t afraid to ask questions again, and even use body language to clarify our meaning,” he said.

Through this experience, SCU students not only enrich their academic knowledge, but also hone their cross-cultural adaptation skills. This international internship program is expected to become a gateway for closer cooperation between SCU and various partner universities around the world and particularly under ASEACCU.
