San Beda University, in its maiden year of participation, soars among top-tier higher education institutions in the world, according to the 2022 Times Higher Education (THE) University Impact Rankings. 

THE University Impact Rankings is “one of the most influential rankings. It is the only global performance table that assesses universities’ contributions and initiatives to realize the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals,” said Dr. J. Prospero E. De Vera III, Chairman of the Commission on Higher Education.

“The assessment uses calibrated indicators to provide comprehensive and balanced comparisons across four broad areas: research, teaching, outreach, and stewardship,” Chairman De Vera added.

WE TOWER AMONG PREMIUM UNIVERSITIES IN THE PROMOTION OF PEACE, JUSTICE, AND STRONG INSTITUTIONS 

San Beda University ascends to global ranking, and subsequently to a very robust position in the Philippines in the promotion of peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, access to justice for all and building of effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions at all levels. 

According to THE, this ranking focuses on how universities can support strong institutions in their country and promote peace and justice. It explores universities’ research on peace and justice, their participation as advisers for government and their policies on academic freedom. 

San Beda University ascended to the highest grade in the Philippines following Ateneo de Manila University.

WE SOAR AMONG TOP UNIVERSITIES WITH STRONG IMPACTS IN RESEARCH ON KEY DISEASES, SUPPORT FOR HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONS, AND HEALTH OF STUDENTS AND EMPLOYEES

THE states that this ranking focuses on universities’ research on the key conditions and diseases that have a disproportionate impact on health outcomes across the world, universities’ support for healthcare professions, and the health of students and employees. 

San Beda University’s volume of research on health and wellbeing, proportion of health graduates, collaborations, and health services clutched the uppermost ranks in the Philippines following Ateneo de Manila University and University of Santo Tomas.

WE ARE AMONG HIGH GRADE UNIVERSITIES WITH ROBUST IMPACTS TO QUALITY EDUCATION 

According to THE, this ranking focuses on universities’ contribution to early years and lifelong learning, their research on quality education in general, and their commitment to inclusive education.

THE further elaborates that it focuses on research on early years and lifelong learning education, proportion of graduates with teaching qualifications, lifelong learning measures, and proportion of first-generation students (referring to those starting a degree who identify as being the first person in their immediate family to attend university).

WE GLIDE WITH TOP-TIER UNIVERSITIES IN THE AREA OF IMPACTFUL PARTNERSHIPS FOR THE GOALS 

According to THE, this ranking looks at broader ways in which universities support the United Nations SDGs through collaboration with other countries, the promotion of best practices, and the publication of data. The premise is that unless all partners work together towards the SDGs, they cannot be achieved.

Aside from research and publication of SDG reports, the following were given significant consideration: 

  • Relationships with regional Nongovernment Organizations (NGOs) and government for SDG policy 
  • Cross-sectoral dialogue about SDGs with government or NGOs 
  • Collaborating internationally to capture data relating to SDGs Collaborating internationally to develop best practice on tackling SDGs
  • Collaborating with NGOs to tackle SDGs through student volunteering programs, research programs or educational resources
  • Commitment to meaningful education around the SDGs across the university, relevant and applicable to all students 
  • Dedicated courses (full degrees, or electives) that address sustainability and the SDGs 
  • Dedicated outreach educational activities for the wider community, which could include alumni, residents, displaced people
